Note that not all RS-232 USB-serial converters support data rates above 115200. Using the one
supplied with the original shipment is recommended.
5.1.5 Serial COM port
Go to Communication > Serial Port and select the correct port from the drop-down serial port
menu
When connected the COM port will appear in the Device Manager. (Go to Start: Control Panel:
System and Security: Device Manager). It will usually appear as USB Serial Port (COMx)
Example: Error message: No instrument detected on port COMx
This error message is a sign of something being wrong with either the computer or the serial-USB
converter.
1. Make sure the power supply is plugged in and the green power light is on. If it is not receiving
power try a different outlet or resetting the GFI (if equipped) on the outlet. If the power supply has
failed, purchase a new one by contacting a sales representative.
2. Make sure the correct communications port is selected and available in the Serial Port
Parameters dialog. See points above.
3. Check the USB to Serial adaptor. Confirm that you can see a light on the converter when trying to
establish connection. If the adapter is detected but has a warning symbol next to it, try reinstalling
or updating the driver (see section about Serial-to-USB converter).
4. Make sure a properly working adapter/port is not in use by another application. Close any
application which was previously using the port to release it and make it available for use. Vectrino
Profiler specifics: If multiple instances of the Vectrino Profiler software are open, close all but one,
then in the menu bar select Communications: Disconnect All to free any in use ports.
5. If the problem can be fixed by re-booting the computer, it seems to point to the computer more
than the converter. You could try another PC if one is available and see if that fixes things.
Example: Error message: Port failure or port in use by other application.
The "Port failure" message happens when an attempt to open the serial port fails (which means that
either the port is "broken", non-existent or it's been taken over by another application). Ensure that
the USB-converter and all cabling is firmly connected and that nothing is coming loose during
operation.
5.1.6 Break Response
Send a break by clicking Communication > Terminal Emulator, and click the Send Break button. If
the instrument is powered and properly connected and if the terminal is set to use the correct serial
port, you will see the instrument’s wake-up message (AquaPro example below):
