Considerations for Exterior Applications in
Cold Climates
3. All water and condensate piping that is exposed
to freezing temperatures must be insulated and
heat traced as per local code and/or heat tracing
manufacturer’s requirements. It is recommended
that this tracing be thermostatically activated to
run as needed, not always on. Self regulating ca-
ble is recommended.
4. e-Series units have a 120V power feed in ad-
dition to their primary 3 phase power feed. The
120V feed is intended to be connected to a power
source with a generator or battery backup. See
Table 2 on page 7 for electrical specications.
Backup electrical support is important to protect
the unit in case of power failure on the main cir-
cuit, unless the main circuit is itself backed up by
a generator. For installations that do not require
backup power, the unied power package acces-
sory can condense incoming power to a single
point electrical feed.
5. Water pipes in exterior space should pitch down
toward the e-Series pipe entry points, so if a man-
ual drain down is necessary, all exterior piping
can drain to the dump valve within the heat pump.
6. Condensate pipes must pitch down to a freeze
protected drain point or to conditioned space for
vents or condensate pumps for further handling.
Do not install vents or condensate pumps outside.
7. If lling the system in cold weather, ensure the
120V power circuit is active BEFORE lling the
circuit.
See “Pre-Startup Checklist” on page 33 and “Start-
up Procedure” on page 34 for more information.
