Recommended Ac
tions
NOTICE
Do not crank th
e engine continuously for more than
30 seconds. Allow the starting motor to cool for two
minutes before cranking the engine again.
Diagnostic Codes
Check for ac
tive diagnostic codes and event codes
on the electronic service tool. Troubleshoot any
active codes before continuing with this procedure.
Electrical Connectors
1. Inspect th
e electrical connectors. Refer to
Troubleshooting, “Electrical Connectors - Inspect”.
2. Repair any
faulty electrical connectors or replace
any faulty electrical connectors.
3. Ensure th
at all the connector seals are in place
and that the connectors have been correctly
installed.
4. Ensure that the repairs have eliminated the fault.
If the fault has not been eliminated proceed to
“ECM Con
nection”.
ECM Connection
1. If a fault is suspected with the ECM power and
ground connections refer to Troubleshooting,
“Elect
rical Power Supply Circuit - Test”.
2. Verify that the ECM connections for the power and
groun
d connections at the fuel pump are correctly
connected.
3. Repa
ir any faults and ensure that the faults have
been eliminated.
4. If th
e repairs do not eliminate the faults, proceed
to Fuel Supply”.
Fue
l Supply
1. Visually check the fuel tank for fuel. The fuel
gau
ge may be faulty.
2. Ensure that the fuel supply valve (if equipped) is
in
the full OPEN position.
3. If the temperature is below 0 °C (32 °F), check
fo
rsolidied fuel (wax).
4. Check the primary lter/water separator for water
i
n the fuel.
5. Check for fuel supply lines that are restricted.
6. Check that the low pressure fuel lines are tight
and secured pro
perly.
7. Check the fuel lters.
8. Check the diesel fuel for contamination.
9. Check for air
in the fuel system.
10. Ensure that the fuel system has been primed.
11. Check the fuel pressure. Start the engine and
then use the electronic service tool to check
that the pre
ssure in the fuel rail is more than
18000 kPa (2610 psi).
12. If the repa
ir does not eliminate the fault refer to
“Intake Manifold Pressure”.
Intake Man
ifold Pressure
1. Use the electronic service tool to verify the intake
manifold
pressure.
2. Turn the start switch to the ON position.
3. The intake manifold pressure should read
0±0.5kPa(0.07psi).Iftheintakemanifold
pressur
e is not within the limits, perform the
following steps.
4. Ensure
that the air lter is clean and serviceable.
5. Check the air intake and the exhaust system for
the fol
lowing defects:
Blockages
Restrictions
Damag
e to the air intake and exhaust lines and
hoses
Thro
ttle Signal
Monitor the status for “Throttle Position on the
elec
tronic service tool. Verify that the status for
“Throttle Position is stable and that the engine is
able to reach high idle speed.
ECM Power Supply
1. Ins
pect the circuit between the ECM and the
batteries for poor connections and damage.
Inspect the wiring, the connectors, and the power
re
lay.
2. Inspect the circuit between the ECM and the
ke
yswitch. Inspect the wires, the connectors, and
the keyswitch.
