OPERATINGTHETRANSMISSION
TransmissionWarm–Up
Incoldweather[below32°F(0°C)],you
mayndshiftingsluggishwhenyou
rststartup.Transmissionwarm-upis
especiallyimportantatthistime,but
itisalwaysagoodideatowarmyour
transmissionoilbeforestartingouton
theroad.
Towarmthetransmissionlubricating
oilduringenginewarm-up:
1.PutthetransmissioninNeutral.
2.Releasetheclutchpedalandlet
thetransmissionoperateinNeutral
forthreetoveminutespriorto
shiftingintoeitheraforwardor
reverserange.
PuttingtheVehicleinMotion
Aftermakingsurethevehicle'soil
andairpressurearecorrectandall
otherpartsandsystemsareinproper
workingcondition:
1.Ifyourtruckisequippedwitha
handthrottle,disengagethehand
throttlebeforedrivingthevehicle.
2.Fullydepresstheclutchpedaluntil
theclutchbrakemakescontact.
Thecontactwilloccuratabout1
inchorlessfromtheoorboard.
°Thetotalstrokeoftheclutch
pedalisabout10inches.The
rstinchesisfreetravel.
Afterthefreetravelcomes
thereleasestroke,whichis
thepartthatfullyreleasesthe
clutch.Thelastinchengages
theclutchbrake.
°Alwaysstartoutinalowgear.
Startinginahighergear,
evenwithalightload,will
causeaveryjumpystartand
excessivewear.
CAUTION
Alwaysuserstgearoralowspeed
rangetostartthevehicleinmotion.
Theuseofahighergearorspeed
rangeforcesunduestrainontheen-
gine,clutch,othertransmissioncom-
ponents,andmaycausedamage.
3.Evaluatetheroadsurface
conditionsandterrainyourvehicle
ison.Selectagearlowenoughto
letyourvehiclestartforwardwith
thethrottleatidle.
4.Pushtheparkingbrakevalve
handle(Yellow)againstthedash
paneltoreleasethebrakes.
5.Releasetheclutchpedal,then
graduallyacceleratetopermit
smoothstarting,
6.Donotallowyourvehicle
toroll(evenalittle)inthe
