TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT (TMJ) EXPOSURE
User’s Manual
11 TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT (TMJ) EXPOSURE
11.1 Double TMJ exposure (lateral, PA or lateral-PA)
This procedure will produce open and closed views of the
left and right temporomandibular joints.
Before taking a true profile TMJ exposure determine the
angles at which the long axes of the condyles are from the
transcranial line. To do this take a submental vertex
exposure of the patient and measure the condyle angles.
Adjust the angle according to the instructions for 5.2
“Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) exposure programs” on
page 14).
NOTE In case you do not adjust the angle the exposure
program will use a default value of 17°.
Note that this is a double exposure and the C-arm will
travel through two exposure cycles.
Use the chin support for this exposure. Insert the chin
support into the adapter. Insert the adapter into the holes
in the patient support table.
11.1.1 First exposure - jaw closed
Select the double TMJ exposure program you require,
refer to section 8.3 “Selecting temporomandibular joint
(TMJ) exposure program” on page 41.
Select the correct exposure parameters for the patient
being X-rayed according to the values in the following
table. Note that there are two sets of kV values: one set
for the closed jaw and a second set for the open jaw.
NOTE If the required diagnostic value can be reached
with lower mA values than the following table
indicates, you can use those lower values.
Always try to minimize the radiation dose to the
patient.
NOTE Increase the kV value in the enhanced resolution
mode by 2 kV and the mA value by 2 mA.
