Connecting to the Device
You can accomplish initial device configuration and management in a number of ways. An Alteon
device includes a console connection, Telnet session, or SSH connection for initial configuration.
The following sections detail the procedures necessary to establish one of the connections for initial
device configuration:
• Establishing a Console Connection
• Establishing a Telnet Connection
• Establishing an SSH Connection
Establishing a Console Connection
To establish a console connection
1. Using the serial cable, connect the console port of the Alteon Application Switch to the ASCII
terminal or computer running terminal emulation.
2. Do one of the following:
— If you are using an ASCII terminal, power on the terminal.
— If you are using a computer with terminal emulation software, run the terminal emulation
program and use the following port parameters:
• Bits per second: 9600
• Data bits: 8
•Parity: None
• Stop bits: 1
•Flow control: None
3. Do one of the following:
— If you are using an ASCII terminal, press Enter a few times on the terminal to establish the
connection.
— If you are using a computer with terminal emulation software, perform the functions
necessary to connect to the device.
If the connection has been successfully established, a login prompt is be displayed and a
password is requested.
4. Enter the default administrator password:
admin. The CLI main menu will be displayed once the
entered password has been verified.
5. Use the
/cfg/sys/mmgmt menu to configure the following static IP address, subnet mask,
broadcast address, and default gateway.
6. Enable the management ports.
7. Apply and save the configuration.
For more information on the CLI commands, see the Alteon Application Switch Operating System
Command Reference.
Establishing a Telnet Connection
A Telnet connection offers the convenience of accessing the device from any computer connected to
the network. Telnet access provides the same options for user and administrator access as those
available through the console port.
