9 - STEERING SYSTEMS 288
9.4 GYROSCOPIC STABILIZERS
To reduce the annoying effect of the oscillatory motion of the roll, determined
by the wave motion, a system has been installed consisting of two gyroscop-
ic stabilizers (2) able to generate a rotation equal and opposite to that of the
waves. In fact, the system combines a signicant reduction in roll both when
the yacht is stationary and when cruising with low energy consumption that
does not compromise the quality of life on board and leave the performance
unchanged.
Thanks to these very important features, the device can be kept active even
during the night to maintain greater comfort damping almost completely the
annoying motion of roll.
Gyroscopic stabilizers are based on a known physical principle: a gyroscope
tends to keep its axis of rotation vertical, parallel to the acceleration of grav-
ity.
When an external cause intervenes to vary its position, such as the roll de-
termined by the wave motion, it opposes with a rotation on an axis per-
pendicular to its own rotation axis and to that of the cause of the heeling.
In the case of gyroscopic stabilizers, this operation generated (roll) is attenu-
ated by the presence of two dampers specially calibrated according to the
characteristics of each yacht.
The system consists of two stabilisers positioned next to each other in the
engine room under the garage, controlled by two displays (1) positioned on
the synoptic panel in pilothouse.
