ChoosingaChildSeat
Childrenshouldbeintherearseatsandproperlyrestrainedinachildorboosterseat
appropriatefortheirheightandweight.UseachildseatthatmeetstheFederalMotor
VehicleSafetyStandards(FMVSS)andisappropriateforthechild'sage,height,andweight.
Alsocheckchildseatusagerecommendationswithlocalandstatelaws,theAmerican
AcademyofPediatrics(AAP),andtheNationalHighwayTrafficSafetyAdministration
(NHTSA).Compliancedocumentationcaneitherbefoundonastickeraffixedtothechild
seat,orintheinstructionsincludedwiththeseat.Followthechild-seatmanufacturer's
instructionswheninstallingachildseatinthevehicle,includingwhethertheseatis
compatiblewiththevehicleinwhichitwillbeinstalled.
InstallingaChildSeat
Followthestateandseatmanufacturerguidelinesforwhethertoinstallthechildseatrear-
orforward-facing.Theserulesareoftenbasedonthechild'sage,weight,andheight.
Ifachildseatcannotbeinstalledsecurelyintherear-centerseatingpositionduetoseat
size,spacelimitations,orseatcontours,installthechildseatoneithersidepositionsofthe
outboardseatsnearthewindows.Therear-centerseatingpositionmaybestaccommodate
asmallerboosterseatoraninfantbucketseatwithabottombasethatfitssnuglyagainst
thecontoursoftheseatcushions.Thesetypesofchildseatsshouldbesecuredwithasnug
fitwiththevehicle'sseatbelt.
