text editor A program which allows you to create and edit
batch files and other text files.
utility A program used by the operating system to
organise and control files, disks and devices.
VESA Video Electronics Standards Association. An
association originally formed to produce standards
for super VGA display adapters and which was
responsible for defining the VL-bus.
VGA A video graphics adapter and standard providing a
selection of screen modes.
VL-bus VESA local bus (see local bus)
Windows 3.11 A set of programs which extends the MS-DOS
operating system. It provides a graphical user
interface (GUI) based on windows, icons, menus and
the use of a mouse.

Windows NT
Newer versions of Windows 3.11 which supports
Plug and play and greater security and power
management.
word length Serial communications parameter defining the
length of one character of information to be
transmitted or received.
write protect The mechanism provided on a floppy disk to prevent
the information on it from being changed.
ZIF Zero Insertion Force. A type of socket that uses a
lever to lock and release the component in the
socket.
