What does ESD mean?
All electronic modules are tted with highly integrated units or components. For technological
reasons, these electronic components are very sensitive to overvoltage and therefore also to
discharge of static electricity.
The abbreviation ESD has become established for these electrostatic sensitive components/
modules. You will nd the internationally used designation ESD for an electrostatic sensitive
device.
Electrostatic sensitive devices are marked with the following symbol:
NOTICE
Electrostatic sensitive devices can be destroyed by voltages that are far below the threshold of
human perception. These voltages occur even when you simply touch a component or
electrical connections of a module without being electrostatically discharged. The damage that
occurs to a module due to an overvoltage cannot usually be detected immediately. It only
becomes noticeable after a long period of operation.
Charging
Any person who is not connected conductively to the electrical potential of their surroundings
can be electrostatically charged.
The following gure shows the maximum values of the electrostatic voltages to which an
operator can be charged if they come into contact with the materials indicated in the gure.
These values correspond to the specications of IEC 801-2.
