A.1 RS-232 Serial Cable Wiring
The correct RS-232 cable is required to connect your PC to the SITRANS F 1010
flowmeters. For this purpose a "Null Modem" cable is necessary. These can be purchased
either from Siemens, or commercially, or can be constructed by the user. The main
differences are the terminal end at the flowmeter, which varies by flowmeter type.
The SITRANS F 1010 models come in different hardware configurations. Due to the different
flowmeter configurations, there are 3 types of RS-232 communication cables employed. You
can determine which cable is required for your model flowmeter from the table below. Be
sure you have the appropriate cable available for use.

For those who would prefer to make the cables themselves, the required parts (except for
the RS-232 connector for the FUP1010 weatherproof flowmeter types) should be available at
most computer or electronics stores. You will find drawings of the terminations for these
cables and a reference table below. The table provides the signal names, PC termination
and flowmeter termination for each type of flowmeter.
Also, in most computer stores, or online, you will be able to find or you may already have a
serial "LapLink" cable or "Null Modem" cable. These cables can be used to communicate
with all SITRANS F 1010 NEMA 4X and NEMA 7 flowmeters.
If you purchased a SITRANS F 1010 NEMA 7 model, you may have received the special
connector used for the RS-232 terminal in a packet included with your flowmeter. This
connector will enable you to construct the appropriate cable for this flowmeter type.

Many new la
ptop PCs are not equipped with serial ports and only have USB ports. These
PCs require a USB to RS-232 adaptor that can be purchased commercially.
