5000 MV ONLY!
The clamp-on CT referred to previously is either the miniprobe as shown below for older 5000
Bird Dog Plus units or the small clamp on CT’s (5000-MV-SC2-2 probes) for 5000 MV Bird Dog
Plus units and the Small I Probes (6000-SC2-3) for 6000 Bird Dog Plus units. The latter 2 probes
look the same and are in the 2
nd
picture below:
The following is a discussion of the types of probes to use and how to connect the probes to test
each phase of the above mentioned meter types. In situations where you have CT rated meters
(Forms 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, & 9 meters) and have no test switches, Spinlab has Meter Base Adapters
equipped with test switches that plug into your existing meter base. Your meter plugs in on top of
the meter base adapter and you can test out your meters and/or your meter circuits. For more
information on Meter Base Adapters, see Section 14.9 of the 5000 & 6000 Bird Dog Plus
Instruction Manual.
Note: Probes & Connections to Use for 6000 Bird Dog Plus Owners—
For 6000 Bird Dog Plus owners you will employ the following rules when using this single
phase method of testing:
Always use the A phase duckbill connector or phase A clamp-on CT
Always leave the yellow (or green for older units) voltage alligator clip unconnected
These rules always apply except in a form 2 & 12 meters where you will use phase A &
B clamp-on CTs.
On the 3 Phase Connector Box, you will set the following knobs before powering up the
Bird Dog Plus:
Large Knob--Set to either Duckbill or Small I Probes, depending on which probe you
are using
Small Knob--Set to either Flexible Coil or High Voltage
