5. Lift the footrest, exposing the top of the
mo w er dec k.
6. R emo v e the dipstic k/fill plug from the top of
the g ear bo x ( Figure 41 ) and mak e sure that the
lubricant is betw een the marks on the dipstic k.

Changing the Mower Deck Gear Box
Lubricant
1. P osition the mac hine and cutting unit on a
lev el surface .
2. Lo w er the mo w er dec k to the 1 inc h (2.5 cm)
height-of-cut.
3. Diseng ag e the PTO , mo v e the motion control
lev ers to the neutral loc k ed position and set
the parking brak e .
4. Mo v e the throttle lev er to the Slo w position,
stop the engine , remo v e the k ey , and w ait for
all mo ving par ts to stop before lea ving the
operating position.
5. Lift the footrest, exposing the top of the

6. R emo v e the dipstic k/fill plug from the top of
the g ear bo x ( Figure 41 ).
7. Place a funnel and drain pan under the drain
plug located under the front of the g ear bo x
and remo v e the plug, draining the lubricant
into the pan.
8. R e place the drain plug .
9. Add enough lubricant, appro ximately 12 oz
(283 ml), until the lev el is betw een the marks
on the dipstic k.

Air Cleaner Maintenance
• Chec k the air cleaner body for damag e whic h
could possibly cause an air leak. R e place a
damag ed air cleaner body . Chec k the whole
clean air intak e system for leaks , damag e , or
loose hose clamps .
• Ser vice the air cleaner filter when the air
cleaner indicator ( Figure 42 ) sho ws red or
ev er y 400 hours (more frequently in extremely
dusty or dir ty conditions). Do not o v er ser vice
the air filter .
