What causes a mechanical knocking sound in a Toro Engine?

  If your Toro Engine is producing a mechanical knocking sound, it could be due to a loose blade (mower only); inspect and tighten the blade nut to the correct torque. A loose flywheel can also cause knocking; inspect and tighten the flywheel nut to the correct torque. Pre-ignition can also result in a knocking sound; see the “Engine Pre-Ignites” table. A loose rod cap can also cause knocking; replace the rod and bearings. Finally, loose engine mounting bolts can contribute to the noise; tighten the bolts.

Why is my Toro Lawn-boy Engine smoking dark and running poorly?

  If your Toro Engine is smoking excessively with dark smoke and running poorly, the carburetor might be running too rich; clean and check the carburetor. Another cause could be that the choke is in the “On” position; move it to the high speed or “Off” position.

What causes pre-ignition in a Toro Lawn-boy?

  If your Toro Engine is pre-igniting, it could be due to the wrong spark plug (too hot); install the correct type of spark plug. Low-quality fuel (old or stale) can also cause pre-ignition; replace it with fresh, unleaded regular fuel. Carbon buildup in the engine can also contribute; decarbonize the engine and muffler. Excessive alcohol in the fuel can also cause this issue; replace it with fresh unleaded fuel having no more than 10% ethanol. Finally, a sheared flywheel key can cause pre-ignition; inspect and repair it.

Why won't the crankshaft turn on my Toro Engine?

  If the crankshaft of your Toro Engine will not turn, the engine brake might be incorrectly engaged (mower only); disengage the brake and inspect and repair as necessary. The blade might be jammed in the housing (mower only); inspect and repair or replace it. The piston might be seized in its cylinder; inspect and repair or replace it. Finally, the starter might be jammed; repair the starter.

Why is my Toro Lawn-boy Engine smoking light but running well?

  If your Toro Engine is smoking excessively with light-colored smoke but running well, it could be due to a slight oil accumulation in the crankcase, which is normal on start-up. The air cleaner element might be clogged; clean and re-oil or replace the air cleaner element (mower only). The fuel/oil mixture might be too rich; drain the fuel tank and fill with fuel of the correct mixture. The choke might be in the “On” position; move it to the high-speed or “Off” position.
