3.1.3 TRAILER / VEHICLE TOWING
Towing a vehicle or trailer places extra demands on your
driving skills and affects the handling, durability,
performance and economy of your motorhome.
The factory installed towing hitch is rated as a medium
duty Class II hitch. The maximum hitch or tongue weight
should not exceed 350 lb. The maximum trailer or towed
vehicle weight should not exceed 3500 lb.
Caution - Do Not install a weight equalizing type of
hitch on your motorhome.
The combined weight of the motorhome and the towed
unit should not exceed the Gross Combined Weight
Rating (GCWR). Also, the combined weight of the
motorhome and towed unit should not exceed the
motorhome's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) or
its rear Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) as listed on
the Vehicle Certification label.
To be sure of the correct balance in weight, it is advised
that you take your loaded vehicle to a weigh-scale to
determine the actual weight distribution. After you have
done this once, you will have a better idea on how to load
in the future.
Make sure your towed unit is equipped and connected to
your motorhome with the proper brake system that
meets the applicable state or provincial regulations.
Many states require a separate braking system on towed
vehicles or trailers with a looaded weight of more than
1,500 pounds (680 Kg). For your safety it is
recommended that a separate functional brake system
be used on any towed vehicle or trailer. Your motorhome
is equipped with additional wiring with electrical power for
a brake controling device. See your RV dealer for
additional equipment and towing information. Also see
your towed vehicle owners guide for further information.
Remember, your motorhome will handle differently with
a trailer or vehicle in tow. Stopping distances will
increase with the weight of the towed vehicle. When
descending a steep or long grade, reduce speed and shift
to a lower gear to control your speed. Avoid prolonged or
frequent application of brakes if at all possible to prevent
overheating and possible failure of the braking system.
