Engine oil filter By-pass filter
Maintenance – Lubrication System
Oil Change – Engine
The oil should be changed when the engine is
hot.
WARNING! Hot oil can cause burns.
Engines with oil scavenging pump (accessory): Re-
move the oil dipstick and connect the suction pipe to
the dipstick tube. Start the pump and collect the oil in
a container.
Alternatively, the oil can be drained after removing
the oil sump drain plug.*
Fill oil through the filler on the front valve cover or the
filler tube at the front of the engine (accessory on
TAMD71 engines). For oil quality, see page 20. For
viscosity and capacities, see “Technical Data” on
page 96.
The oil level should be within the marked area on the
dipstick. The level must never be allowed to drop
beneath the lower mark.
The scavenging pump can also be used to add oil
(the + and – cables are swapped on the electrical
scavenging pump). Refer to the Wiring Diagram on
page 71, 73, 75 or 77.
NOTE! Collect up the old oil and deposit at a
proper site for disposal. Never dump oil over-
board into the water.
*Note: The TAMD63 has no drain plug.
Replacing the engine oil/by-pass filter
Note: Place a container beneath the filter when
removing to avoid spillage.
1. Unscrew the oil filter (1) or by-pass filter (2) using
special tool, discard the old filters.
WARNING! Hot oil can cause burns.
2. Lightly oil the new filter’s rubber gasket and
check its mating surface on the mounting.

Oil cooler
See the description in the “Cooling system” section
on pages 54–55 for information on the oil coolers.
Oil filter
The oil filter filters contaminants from the oil. The en-
gine oil filter is of full flow type, which means that all
the oil is filtered before it enters the lubrication sys-
tem. The filter element is made of folded filter paper.
In the TAMD63, the filter is located in front of the
starter motor on the right of the engine. In the
TAMD71*, 72, the filter is at the front of the engine.
In all marine propulsion engines, the filter may alter-
natively (as an accessory) be located at the back of
the engine’s, left side.
The TAMD63 also has a by-pass (partial flow) lubri-
cating oil filter located above the engine oil filter. A
by-pass filter can be obtained as an accessory for
other engines. This filter is located behind the lubri-
cating oil filter at the front of the engine.
As only a small amount of oil passes through the by-
pass filter, the flow rate is relatively low. The filter is
therefore able to separate even very small particles
from the oil. The filter element is made of folded filter
paper.
*Note! In the TAMD71 classifiable auxiliary engine, the filter is
located in front of the starter motor on the right of the engine.
