The following procedure provides a systemat ic check and inspect ion of the complete i gnit ion system. If the engine
can be started, commence fault tracing w ith the test diode to establish the sour ce of the fault . Otherw ise. proceed to
page 136.

Connect test diode (special to ol 5280) to test t ermi nal
on
left - hand wheel hou sing (yellow/red leadl. Connect
red lead
to battery pos it ive term inal.
Switch on i gnition. Dio de shou ld li gh t. S tart engine. in-
crease speed to above 3000 r/
min and reduce to ap-
prox . 1000 r/ min. This will i nitiate internal diagnostics .
One flash:
Ma x. timing retarda tion 9 .B".
Two flashes: L ow batte ry voltage.
Three flashes: Fault in co ntrol unit knock sens or circ uit .
Replace
con trol unit .
Four nashes: F
ault in knock sensor or wiring . See H19
