3. 2 Location areas
Location areas are used to divide the radio area into as many as four locally subdi-
vided supply ranges. The system knows the location area in which a handset is lo-
cated and only needs to send messages to the cordless phone within that location
area. Location area partitioning helps to reduce the system load caused by the sig-
nalling of incoming calls.

Distributing radio units among several location areas only makes sense as of a cer-
tain system size. The radio units are allocated by means of configuration. For a de-
scription of the best way to group the radio units of a system in location areas, see
page 40 ff.
