Chapter 5 Windows CE Operating System
Open or Closed Shell
At startup, you can run the terminal platform as either open or closed.
Watchdog Errors
You can show or hide watchdog errors at startup.
Device Name
The Device Name tab of the System Information dialog lets you identify your
terminal to other devices on the network by providing a device name and
description.
Shell Option Description
Open system Launches the Windows CE desktop at startup.
Closed system (default) Launches FactoryTalk View ME Station at startup.
TIP
You can also allow or restrict access to the Windows CE desktop within
FactoryTalk View ME Station by choosing Terminal Settings>Desktop
Access Setup. Refer to Desktop Access
on page 50.
Shell Option Description
Always show watchdog errors at startup Shows the fatal watchdog error (error 02) at startup
and halts the normal boot process.
The system launches the maintenance window with
the watchdog error displayed. You can continue
booting from this window. Refer to Access
Maintenance Operations on page 151 for details.
The error is logged to the System Event log.
Never show watchdog errors at startup Hides the errors at startup and logs the error to the
system event log.
TIP
Make sure the device name is unique. Duplicate names will conflict and
cause network problems.
