11.23 Checking and cleaning the chain for dirt
• Check the chain for coarse dirt accumulation.
• Clean If the chain is very dirty.

Oil or grease on the tires reduces the road grip.

Oil or grease on the brake discs reduces the braking eect.
Environmental hazard
Hazardous substances cause environmental damage.
• Remove the lubricant from the tires using a suitable cleaning agent.
• Always keep the brake discs free of oil and grease.
• Clean the brake discs with brake cleaner when necessary.
• Some substances are harmful to the environment.
The service life of the chain depends largely on its maintenance.
Preparatory work
• Raise the motorcycle with a lift stand.
Main work
• Clean the chain regularly and then treat with chain spray.
11.24 Checking the chain tension
Danger of accidents
Incorrect chain tension damages components and results in accidents.
If the chain is tensioned too much, the chain, engine sprocket, rear sprocket, transmission and rear
wheel bearings wear more quickly. Some components may break if overloaded.
• Check the chain tension regularly.
• Set the chain tension in accordance with the specification.
Preparatory work
• Raise the motorcycle with a lift stand.
Main work
• Press the chain upward at the end of the chain sliding piece
and determine chain tension A.
The upper part of the chain 1 must then stretch.
The chains do not always wear out uniformly, so
repeat this measurement at various points in the
chain.
