ENGINE PROTECTION SYSTEM
The engine protection system on electronically controlled engines is designed to prevent damage from prolonged
exposure to engine conditions out of standard operating specifications. The engine protection system monitors key
engine parameters and logs diagnostic faults when the engine operates at a condition that is over or under the normal
range.
When an engine protection fault occurs, the Power View will warn the operator by lighting a LED and displaying a fault
code, the engine may also derate the power or speed of the engine when certain conditions exceed limit thresholds.
Derates are based on fuel and speed and are determined by time and/or severity of the out of range condition. A list
of derate thresholds is shown in the table below.
The engine protection system helps to prevent progressive engine damage by proactively warning the equipment
operator of potentially damaging engine conditions and derating the engine. This will result in a potential reduction in
repair costs and engine down-time. Operator training remains as an important element of the engine protection
strategy. Should the equipment operator elect to avoid the engine protection functions, engine damage can result.
Engine Derate Thresholds
Operating parameters with both threshold 1 and threshold 2 listed below are derated based on severity of the out of
range condition. The amount of derating is proportional to the out of range condition up to the upper threshold when
maximum derating is in effect. Operating parameters that are derated based on time will ramp up to maximum derate
after the out of range condition is logged and the delay time is up. Engine will ramp back down once a normal
condition is reached.
