1.Doaninspectionofthetailrotordriveshaftassemblyasfollows:
a.Removeanddisassemble,asapplicable,allthecomponentsofthe
tailrotordriveshaftassembly.
b.Visuallyexamineallthecomponentsofthetailrotordriveshaftsfor
signsofarcburns.Ifarcburnsarefoundonanyonecomponent,do
thefollowing:
(1)Discardthesegmentedshaftassembliesandthefanshaftassembly
(exceptforthetwoblowerimpellersandblowerhousings).
(2)Replacealltheballbearingsbeforeyoureturnthetailrotordriveshaft
assemblytoservice.
c.Visuallyexaminetheforwardandaftimpellersofthefanshaft
assemblyforcondition.Ifsignsofarcburnsarevisibleonanimpeller,
discardtheimpeller.
d.Visuallyexaminetheforwarddriveshaftassemblyandbothcoupling
assembliesforcondition.Ifsignsofarcburnsarevisibleonacomponent,
discardthecomponent.
2.Ifnoarcburnsarevisibleonthetailrotordriveshaftassemblyandif
noarcburnsarefoundonthetailrotorhubandbladeassembliesoron
anypartsofthepitchchangemechanism,thenthetailrotorgearbox
isserviceable.
3.Ifarcburnsarevisibleonthetailrotordriveshaftassemblyorifarc
burnsarefoundonthetailrotorhubandbladeassembliesoronany
partsofthepitchchangemechanism,dothefollowing:
a.Removethetailrotorgearbox.
b.AttachaTHISCOMPONENTWASREMOVEDFROMSERVICE
BECAUSEOFALIGHTNINGSTRIKEtagonthetailrotorgearbox.

c.Sendthetailrotorgearboxtoanapprovedrepairfacilityto
disassemble,clean,anddoadetailedinspection.
d.Replacealltherollerbearingsandballbearingsbeforeyoureturn
thetailrotorgearboxtoservice.
4.Ifthetailrotorgearboxisserviceable,visuallyexaminethechip
detectorforcontaminationafter5to10hoursofoperation.Ifthereare
unwantedparticles,dothefollowing:
a.Removethetailrotorgearbox.
