3.6 Troubleshooting: EM Tracking Unit
EM Tracking Unit Occurrences
Occurrence Symptoms Possible Causes
No power
EM Tracking Unit does not
beep during boot-up and
power LED stays off.
Check that cabling is correctly connected to
EM power.
Check that mains power switch of Curve power
is on.
Verify that power is connected to EM Tracking
Unit cable and the cable is connected to both
connectors at the EM Tracking Unit.
No communication
EM Tracking Unit does not
beep during application
start up.
Check the cabling between Monitor Cart and
EM Tracking Unit.
Incorrect software configuration.
No tracking
Software displays a
crossed out EM Field
Generator symbol.
Check cabling between EM Field Generator
and EM Base Station.
No tracking of EM
instruments
EM instrument port LED is
off.
Check cabling from EM Base Station to EM in-
strument.
If cabling is correct and the EM Base Station
is powered (green power LED), switch off the
EM Base Station using the mains power
switch at the Curve power. Wait at least five
seconds, then switch mains power back on.
EM instrument port LED is
amber.
Check application software is running correctly.
Verify the sterilization cycles of the EM instru-
ment has not been exceeded.
Verify that a suitable Brainlab EM instrument is
connected (see Instrument User Guide for
compatible EM instruments).
EM instrument port LED is
green, but EM instrument
symbol is not displayed.
Verify that the instrument is inside the tracking
volume.
Intermittent instru-
ment tracking
While moving the EM in-
strument, the EM instru-
ment symbol in the soft-
ware is not displayed con-
tinuously.
Check that the EM instruments are inside the
tracking volume of the EM Field Generator,
ideally, not at the edge of the tracking volume.
Check for metallic foreign objects that may be
disturbing the electromagnetic field (e.g., ferro-
magnetic instruments).
The EM instrument symbol
in the software moves al-
though the EM instrument
is held steady.
Electromagnetic interferences from other near-
by electrical devices interferes with the EM
tracking algorithms. Move nearby equipment
further away.
A tracked instrument with a motorized element
(e.g., shaver) interferes with tracking while the
motor is in use. Do not rely on tracking informa-
tion while the motorized element is in use.
