Solving Internet Problems
Problem Possible Cause Solution
Cannot register
Windows when
attempting a Web-
based online
registration
You do not have an
ISP account.
Choose an ISP and
install appropriate
software provided by the
ISP before accessing the
Internet.
Not connecting to
Internet
Dial-Up is not
configured correctly
for the Internet.
Configure Internet setup
using the Internet
Connection Wizard.
Cannot connect to
Internet Service
Provider, or no
Internet access
ISP connection
problem.
Call your ISP for support.
Cannot connect to
AOL
Internet is not set up
correctly, or the
modem is not
connected correctly.
Ensure that the modem
is connected to the
telephone properly and
appears correctly in the
Device Manager. Click
Start
à Settingsà Control
Panel
à Systemà Device
Manager tab. If there is a
modem problem, Modem
will appear in the list with
a yellow circle and
exclamation point beside
it. Double-click on
Modem to see the device
status and a list of
problems. If these are
correct, call AOL for
support of their product.
Unable to set up the
ISP Microsoft
Network (MSN), or
receive vxd error
after trying to install
MSN
Compaq does not
support third party ISP
such as MSN.
Contact Microsoft
Network (MSN) for
support of their product.
Cannot access a
particular website
Internet site filtering is
enabled.
Set the desired level of
Internet security and
filtering. Refer to your
Web browser software
documentation.
