Removing and Replacing Parts 4-25
Real-Time Clock Chip
Figure 4-26. RTC Chip Removal
To remove the RTC chip, follow these steps:
1. If possible, enter the SCSISelect utility, system setup program, and sys-
tem configuration utility. Make printed copies or record the
information in these programs/utilities about how the computer is
configured.
See Chapter 3, “Installing and Configuring SCSI Drivers,” Chapter 4,
“Using the System Setup Program,” and Chapter 5, “Using the System Con-
figuration Utility,” in the User’s Guide for instructions.
2. Turn off the computer and all peripherals.
3. Remove the left computer cover.
4. Remove the support panel and the primary microprocessor module.
5. Cut the cable tie that secures the chip to the system board.
NOTE: The cable tie binding the chip to the system board was necessary for
shipping purposes. You will not need to replace the tie after replacing the
RTC chip.
6. Remove the RTC chip.
Remove the RTC chip from its socket with an IC removal tool.
WARNING: If the system has been running, any installed micro-
processor and heat sink on the modules will be hot. To avoid the
possibility of a burn, be careful when removing or installing system
board components that are located near the microprocessors.
WARNING: Replace the RTC chip only with the same or equivalent
type recommended by the equipment manufacturer to avoid the dan-
ger of explosion. Discard the RTC chip according to the
manufacturer’s instructions.
