Adding storage scenarios (Smart Array storage arrays only):
Add an unassigned p hysical disk to the array.
Add a new disk to the appropriate storage device.

Expand logical drive
This option in the ACU increases the storage capacity of a logical drive by adding unused space on an
array to the logical drive on the same array. The unused space is obtained either by expanding an array
or by deleting
another logical drive on the same array.

Extend an exi

Extending storage using Windows Storage Utilities
Volume extension grows the storage space of a logical drive. During this process, the administrator adds
new storage space to an existing logical drive on the same array, usually after the a rray has been
expanded. An administrator may have gained this new storage space by either expansion or by deleting
another logical drive on the same array. Unlike drive expansion, the operating system must be aware
of changes to the logical drive size.
Youextendavolumeto:
Increase raw data storage
Improve performance by increasing the number of spindles in a logical drive volume
Change fault-tolerance (RAID) congurations
For more information abo ut R AID levels, refer to the Smart Array Controller User Guide, orthedocument
titled Assessing RAID ADG vs. RAID 5 vs. R AI D 1+0. Both are available at the S m art Array controller
web page or at h

Extend volumes using Disk Management
The Disk Management snap-in provides management of hard disks, volumes or p artitions. It can be
used to e
xtendadynamicvolumeonly.
NOTE:
Disk M a nagement cannot be used to extend basic disk partitions.
Guidelines for extending a dynamic volume:
Use the Disk Management or DiskPart utility.
Yo u can extend a volume only if it does not have a le system or if it is formatted NTFS.
Yo u cannot extend volumes formatted using FAT or FAT32.
You cannot extend striped volumes, mirrored volumes, or RAID 5 volumes.
Extend volumes using DiskPart
The DiskPart utility allows the administrator to manage disks at the command line level. Use the utility to
perform disk-related tasks at the comm a nd line as a n alternative to using Disk Management.
