Whileitisimportanttoprotectles,data,andsettingsthatareontheharddiskdrive,youmayalsoneedto
installanewoperatingsystem,installnewdevicedrivers,updateyoursystemUEFI,orrecoverpreinstalled
software.Thisinformationwillhelpyouhandleyourcomputerwithpropercareandkeepitintopworking
shape.

Installinganewoperatingsystem
Ifyouinstallanewoperatingsysteminyourcomputer,youneedtoinstalltheSupplementlesandThinkPad
devicedriversforitatthesametime.Thenecessarylesarelocatedinthefollowingdirectoriesofyour
harddiskdrive:
•TheSupplementlesfortheoperatingsystemsupportedareintheC:\SWTOOLS\OSFIXESdirectory.
•ThedevicedriversfortheoperatingsystemsupportedareintheC:\SWTOOLS\DRIVERSdirectory.
•ThepreloadedsoftwareapplicationsareintheC:\SWTOOLS\APPSdirectory.
Notes:
•Theprocessofinstallingthenewoperatingsystemdeletesallthedataonyourharddisk,including
backupsorimagesthatwerestoredinahiddenfolderbyuseoftheRescueandRecoveryprogram.
•IfyoucannotndtheSupplementles,thedevicedrivers,andapplicationsoftwareyouneedonyour
harddiskdrive,orifyouwanttoreceiveupdatesandthelatestinformationaboutthem,refertothe
ThinkPadWebsiteathttp://www.lenovo.com/ThinkPadDrivers.
Beforeyoubegin
Beforeyouinstalltheoperatingsystem,dothefollowing:
•CopyallthesubdirectoriesandlesintheC:\SWTOOLSdirectorytoaremovablestoragedevice,toavoid
losinglesduringtheinstallation.
•Printthesectionsyouwillbeusing.Gotothesectionfortheoperatingsystemyouareusing:
–“InstallingWindows7”onpage94
–“InstallingWindowsXP”onpage95
Note:IfyourcomputerisaWindows7model,32-bitversionsofWindowsdonotsupportUEFIBIOS
features.Only64-bitversionsofWindowscantakeadvantageofthefeaturesenabledby64-bitUEFIBIOS.
IfyouwanttostartWindowsRecoveryEnvironment(WinRE)using64-bitversionofMicrosoftWindows
InstallationDVD,youshouldnotchangetheinitialUEFI/LegacyBootsettinginThinkPadSetup.The
UEFI/LegacyBootsettingmustbethesameasitwaswhentheWindowsOSimagewasinstalled.Or,you
willseeanerror.
