Checking acid level of vehicle battery

Unscrew the sealing plugs of the batteries.
The acid level in the battery should be about 10 mm over
the upper edge of the plate.
X Refill with distilled water if necessary to adjust the acid level.
X Screw in the sealing plugs.
Checking battery charge status
The charge status of the batteries can be determined by the
battery's acid density. The acid density of the battery should
be 1.28 g/cm
3
. If the acid density is below 1.23 g/cm
3
, the
battery requires charging.
Use an acid tester to determine the acid density.

Check the battery acid level, see “Checking acid level of
vehicle battery” on page 97.
X Loosen the battery terminals and take them off.
Note sequence – first negative battery terminal, then
positive battery terminal.
X Unscrew the sealing plugs.
X Connect the charger.
Note sequence – first connect the positive battery poles,
then negative battery poles of battery and charger.
X Switch on the charger.
X Once the battery is charged, disconnect the charging
device.
Note sequence – first disconnect the negative battery
terminals, then positive battery terminals of battery and
charger.
X Check the battery acid level once more.
A lowered acid level can indicate a defective cell.
X Screw in the sealing plugs.
X Connect the battery terminals.
Note sequence – first positive battery terminal, then
negative battery terminal.
Checking battery poles and connections
X Check the battery terminals for corrosion spots.
X Check the terminals for proper tightness.
X Check whether the terminals have been greased sufficiently
(special grease).
