VS 8/VS 8A Vital Signs Monitor Operator’s Manual 9 - 3
CAUTION
Measuring NIBP on patients connected to an Intra Aortic Balloon Pump
(IABP) machine may result in the NIBP measurement, including PR, to be
inaccurate or fail.
Only use parts and accessories specified in this manual. Follow the
instructions for use and adhere to all warnings and cautions.
Accuracy of NIBP measurement depends on using a cuff of proper size. It is
essential to measure limb circumference and choose a cuff with proper size.
9.3 NIBP Measurement Limitations
Measurement is impossible with heart rate extremes of less than 30 bpm or greater than
300 bpm, or if the patient is on a heart-lung machine. The measurement may be
inaccurate or impossible in the following situations:
Regular arterial pressure pulses are hard to detect
Excessive and continuous patient movement such as shivering or convulsions
Cardiac arrhythmias
Rapid blood pressure changes
Severe shock or hypothermia that reduces blood flow to the peripheries
On an edematous extremity
Obesity, where a thick layer of fat surrounding a limb dampens the oscillations
coming from the artery
NOTE
The effectiveness of this sphygmomanometer has not been established in
pregnant women, including pre-eclamptic patients.
9.4 Measurement Modes
In Spot Check mode, there are three NIBP measurement modes:
Manual: measurement on demand.
BP (Blood Pressure) Averaging: see 9.9 BP Averaging.
Orthostatic BP measurement: see 9.10 Orthostatic BP Measurement.
In Continuous Monitoring mode, there are four NIBP measurement modes:
Manual: measurement on demand.
Auto: repeated measurement at set interval or an interval synchronized with the
real time clock.

STAT: continual rapid series of measurement over a five minute period.
Sequence: continually automatic measurement at set durations and intervals.
9.5 NIBP Display

(4) Systolic pressure
(5) Another measurement mode is available:
If the department is set to Physician Office, swipe on the NIBP area to the left or
right to switch to BP averaging screen. For details, see 9.9 BP Averaging.
If orthostatic BP measurement is enabled, swipe on the NIBP area to the left or
right to switch to orthostatic BP measurement screen. For details, see
9.10 Orthostatic BP Measurement.
