Appendix 6 Safety Informa on
Protec on from Biohazards.
This informa on summarizes the established guidelines for laboratory biohazards. This
summary is based on the guidelines developed by the Centers for Disease Control, the
Clinical and Laboratory Standards Ins tute, and the Occupa onal Safety and Health
Administra on.
Use this summary for general informa on only. It is not intended to replace or supple-
ment your laboratory or hospital biohazard control procedures.
By defi ni on, a biohazardous condi on is a situa on involving infec ous agents biologi-
cal in nature, such as the hepa s B virus, the human immunodefi ciency virus, and the
tuberculosis bacterium. These infec ous agents may be present in human blood, blood
products, and in other body fl uids.
The following are the major sources of contamina on when handling poten ally infec -
ous agents:
• Needles cks
• Hand-to-mouth contact
• Hand-to-eye contact
• Direct contact with superfi cial cuts, open wounds, and other skin condi ons that
may permit absorp on into subcutaneous skin layers
• Splashes or aerosol contact with skin and eyes
To prevent accidental contamina on in a clinical laboratory, strictly adhere to the follo-
wing procedures:
• Wear gloves while servicing parts of the system that have contact with body fl uids,
such as serum, plasma, urine, or whole blood.
• Wash your hands before going from a contaminated area to a non-contaminated
area, or when you remove or change gloves.
• Perform procedures carefully to minimize aerosol forma on.
• Wear facial protec on when spla er or aerosol forma on is possible.
• Wear personal protec ve equipment, such as safety glasses, gloves, lab coats, or
aprons when working with possible biohazard contaminants.
• Keep your hands away from your face.
• Cover all superfi cial cuts and wounds before star ng any work.
