RDS (Radio Data System) BROADCAST RECEPTION
What is RDS (Radio Data System)
In the RDS system, FM broadcast stations transmit such infor-
mation as station name and program type in addition to audio
signals. This unit receives and displays the following three
kinds of data.
RT (Radio Text) data
A message transmitted from the broadcast station using a
maximum of 64 characters.
PS (Program Service Name) data
This refers to the broadcast station name transmitted by an FM
broadcast station.
PTY (Program Type) data
During reception of an FM program, this data indicates the type
of program.

Program concerned with any aspect of Sport.
Program intended primarily to educate, of which the formal element is
fundamental.
All radio plays and serials.
Aspects of National or Regional culture, including Religious affairs,
Philosophy, Social Science, Language, Theater, etc.
Programs about Natural Science and Technology.
Mainly speech-based, light-entertainment programs, such as Quizzes, Panel
Games, Personality interviews, Comedy and Satire.
Commercial music of current popular appeal, often featuring the current
record sales charts.
Contemporary modern music, usually written and performed by young
musicians.
(Middle of the Road Music). “Easy-listening” music, often vocal and usually
of short duration (less than 5 min.).
Classical Music for nonspecialist appreciation. Examples are instrumental
music and choral works.
Performances of major orchestral works, symphonies, chamber m usic, etc.,
and including Grand Opera.
Musical styles other than above categories. For example, Jazz, R&B, Folk,
Country and Reggae.
Displayed only during reception of special emergency broadcasis.
