RadioDetectionAndRanging(RADAR)equipment
isusedtodetectthepresence,distanceandspeed
ofobjects(knownas‘targets’).Radarworksby
transmittingradiopulses,thendetectingreections
ofthesepulses(echoes)fromobjectsintheareaand
displayingthereectionsastargetsonyourMFD.
Important:Untilyouarefamiliarwithinterpreting
theradardisplay;everyopportunityshouldbe
takentocomparetheradarscreenpatternswith
visualtargetssuchasothervessels,buoysand
coastalstructures.Youshouldpractiseharborand
coastalnavigationduringdaylighthoursandin
clearweatherconditions.

Thesizeofatargetonscreenisdependentonmany
factorsandmaynotbeproportionaltoitsphysical
size.Nearbyobjectsmayappeartobethesame
sizeasdistantlargerobjects.
Withexperience,theapproximatesizeofdifferent
objectscanbedeterminedbytherelativesizeand
color/brightnessoftheechoes.
Thesizeofeachonscreentargetisaffectedby:
•Thephysicalsizeofthereectingobject
•Thematerialfromwhichtheobjectismade
(Metallicsurfacesreectsignalsbetterthan
non-metallicsurfaces.)
•Verticalobjectssuchascliffsreectsignalsbetter
thanslopingobjectssuchassandbanks
•Highcoastlinesandmountainouscoastalregions
canbeobservedatlongerRadarranges.
Therefore,therstsightoflandmaybeamountain
severalmilesinlandfromthecoastline.Although
thecoastlinemaybemuchnearer,itmaynot
appearontheRadaruntilthevesseliscloserto
shore.
•Sometargets,suchasbuoysandsmallvessels
difculttodiscern,becausetheydonotpresenta
consistentreectingsurfaceastheybobandtoss
aboutinthewaves.Consequentlytheseechoes
tendtofadeandbrighten,andattimesdisappear
momentarily.
•Buoysandsmallvesselsresembleeachother,but
vesselscanoftenbedistinguishedbytheirmotion.

arerequiredforMARPAoperation,andtoenable
RadaroverlayintheChartapplication.
