Thescannermustalsobemountedwhereitis:
•Aboveheadheight.
•Easilyaccessible
.
•Asnearaspossibletothevessel'scenterline.
•Onarigidandstableplatform,capableofsecurelysupportingthescannerunderseagoing
conditions.
•Clearoflargeobjectssuchastheflybridge,largeenginestacks,searchlights,horns,mastsetc.

•Clearofheatandfumes.
•Atleast1m(3ft)fromamagneticcompassorotherscanners.
Shadowareasandfalseechoes
MounttheRadarscannerawayfromlargestructuresorequipment,suchasenginestacks,
searchlights,horns,ormasts.Theseobjectsmaycauseshadowareasandfalseechoes.For
example,ifyoumounttheRadarscanneronamast,echoesfromothertargetsmaybereflectedfrom
themast.Wetsailsmayalsocauseshadowareas,soRadarperformancemaybereducedinthe
rain.Itisparticularlyimportanttoavoidshadowareasnearthebow.Raisingorevenloweringthe
Radarscannermayhelptoreducetheseeffects.
Inshadowareasbeyondtheobstructiontherewillbeareductionofthebeamintensity.Theremay
beablindsectorifthebeamintensityisnotsufficienttoobtainanechofromanobject.Thismay
occurevenatcloserange.Forthisreasontheangularwidthandrelativebearingofanyshadowarea
mustbedeterminedatinstallation.
Y oumaybeabletodetectshadowareasorfalseechoesonyourmultifunctiondisplay.Forexample,
seacluttercanbeusedasagoodindicatorofblindarcs.DarksectorsontheRadardisplayindicate
possibleshadowedareas.Thisinformationshouldbepostednearthedisplayunitandoperators
mustbealertfortargetsintheseblindareas.
