7.3 Installation location for a single device
Always install the smoke detector in the middle of the ceiling. The
only exception to this is attic spaces with sloping ceilings that run
into an apex. In this case, do not position the smoke detector in
the apex itself. When installed on the ceiling, it must be at least
around 1 metre away from the highest point in the room.
It should ideally be installed on a corbel or roof beam.
This is because static pockets of air that prevent rising smoke
from reaching the walls or corners of the room can build up close
to the walls and particularly in corners of rooms and in the apex
of sloping ceilings.
Smoke detectors should therefore always be installed at least
around 50 cm away from corners of the room, otherwise they
would not be effective in an emergency and would sound too
late.
