When the decompression valve (21) is depressed, the
compression pressure in the combustion chamber
is reduced. This means that the engine offers less
resistance during start-up, which makes it noticeably
easier to start the engine.

The decompression valve is closed automatically when
the motor is running.
If you need to pull the starter handle (16) more than once
to start the engine (e.g. during a cold start), you do not
need to depress the decompression valve again.
