Overview

The Servicevision Scorpio 38’ - 45’ is a telescopic crane designed for professional cinematography, offering smooth and precise camera movements at various speeds. It features a dynamic counterweight system that automatically adjusts to maintain balance during operation, minimizing noise from arm movements.

Function Description:

The Scorpio crane is a versatile tool for capturing dynamic shots, capable of extending and retracting its arm to achieve a wide range of camera positions. It supports various camera setups, including underslung and overslung configurations for the leveling head. The crane's electronic box acts as its central control unit, managing all movements, programming limits, and recording/playback of movements with high precision. This makes it ideal for repetitive shots or complex sequences requiring coordinated crew efforts. The crane can be operated from both sides via an external display that shows real-time data such as arm range, optic height, and pan/tilt degrees. When integrated with Scorpio Heads, it unlocks advanced features like back pan and tracking, allowing the camera to lock onto a specific point in space while the arm moves.

  • Weight of the arm (empty): 533kg (1175lbs)
  • Weight of the dolly, column & fulcrum: 503kg (1109lbs)

Usage Features:

The crane's dolly can be configured for 1m dolly tracks (both 38' and 45' models) or 62cm tracks (38' model only, with collapsible dolly). Pneumatic wheels allow easy relocation on set. The motorized telescopic column can be lifted or retracted via the hand command, eliminating the need for extra tools. The fulcrum, where the arm pivots, includes pan and tilt brakes and fluid screws for friction adjustment. The telescopic arm consists of four sections, with a dynamic counterweight system that automatically balances the arm during extension and retraction. The electronic box offers features like Arc Compensation, programmable movement limits, and movement recording/playback. The portable display provides real-time data and allows operation from either side of the crane. Integration with Scorpio Heads enables advanced functions such as back pan (maintaining a fixed infinity point while the crane swings) and tracking (locking the camera onto a specific point in space). The system also supports augmented reality scenarios by outputting encoder data.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for optimal performance and safety. Key maintenance aspects include:

  • Crane Operation: Daily checks before shooting, including power source, cable conditions, and leveling head function.
  • Dolly Wheels: Inspect and refill air pressure (max 51PSI/305kPa).
  • Telescopic Rails and Rollers: Clean and lubricate outside and inside rails and rollers to ensure smooth movement and prevent noise.
  • Counterweights Square Bearings: Grease regularly to prevent dust interference.
  • Counterweight and First Section Cables: Inspect and tighten cables to prevent bouncing and ensure proper balance. Lubricate pulleys.
  • Motor Brushes: Clean carbon dust from brushes and collector.
  • Electronic Connectors: Disconnect, clean with contact cleaner, and dry to prevent moisture damage.
  • Belts: Inspect and tighten the column motor belt (5M 665), dynamic CW motor belt (T10 480), PAN/TILT encoder belts (T5 990 / T2.5 600), and Leveling Head belt (T5 350) to prevent mechanical play or skipped teeth.
  • Cable Trolleys: Adjust white wheels to prevent them from touching telescopic sections and causing noise.
  • Software Updates: The CCU and SERVO boards can be updated via an SD card.
  • Driver Adjustment: Potentiometers on the ARM, CWE, and Leveling Head drivers can be adjusted for optimal motor behavior, including loop gain, current limit, and speed.
  • CW Motor Removal: The counterweight motor can be detached to reduce the crane's height for transport.

The manual also provides detailed information on troubleshooting common problems related to the leveling head, electronics, column, and counterweights, as well as a list of fuses in the electronic box and their corresponding symptoms if blown. Safety information emphasizes the importance of proper training, personal protective equipment, balancing, and avoiding operation in hazardous conditions.
