6.20 SafeStart
Vehicle type
Tipper, roll-off container chassis and tank- and silo-vehicles
Purpose
Automatically brakes the truck-trailer combination during loading and unloading to
prevent movement.
Examples: dumper with raised dumping body, tanker with open fuel door, container
vehicle with container not sealed.
Function
A sensor connected to the TEBS E modulator detects whether a loading or unload-
ing procedure is taking place. The brake chambers are braked via TEBS E.
SafeStart can be configured to match the respective vehicle type.
Road tankers/Roll-off container: The vehicle is braked by means of the service
brake. No movement is possible until the sensor detects that the loading or unload-
ing process has been completed (by the valve cabinet being closed for instance).
Tipper: here the function permits driving at low speeds in order to facilitate the
unloading process with tippers for instance. As of a speed of 18 km/h, 10 short
brake actions warn the driver that the dumping body, for example, has not yet been
lowered. From a speed of 28 km/h the vehicle is brought to a standstill. After
achieving a full stop (v = 0 km/h), the brake releases after 20 seconds. The func-
tion is then deactivated and will only function again after restarting the ignition.
SafeStart can be combined with the electronic parking brake and/or the Immobi-
lizer. In this case, SafeStart would brake the spring brake cylinders with the Immo-
bilizer and electronic parking brake components.
Installation instructions
The vehicle manufacturer is responsible for proper positioning and installation of
the sensor on the vehicle so that the TEBS E Modulator reliably recognises the
loading or unloading function.
