Kick
Starter
1. Check the ratchet teeth on the kick gear
and ratchet
wheel. The mating edges
should
fit
flush against each other.
If
there
is
severe rounding
off,
replace
as
a
set.
2. Check
to
see
that
the kick gear spins
freely on the kick axle. If
not,
replace
either or both
as
required. Replace
if
any
signs
of
galling are
found.
3. Check
to
see
that
the
ratchet wheel
(splined) slides freely
on the kick axle.
Check
for
burrs
or
other damage.
Re-
place
as
required.
4. Check
axle and wheel splines for wear.
The ratchet
wheel
is
a fairly loose fit on
splines. However,
if
the
wheel
is
so
loose it catches on
the
shaft keeping
the
ratchet wheel spring
from
forcing
it
out,
replace the wheel.
5.
Check
the
ratchet wheel spring
for
fatigue.
If
the free length shows the spr-
ing has
collapsed beyond specification,
replace
the
spring.

6. When reassembling the kick starter,
align the mark on the ratchet ... heel
with
the one on the kick axle
as
shown.

Bearings
and
Oil Seals
Inspection
1.
After
cleaning and lubricating the bear-
ings, rotate
the
inner race with a finger.
If rough spots are noticed, replace the
bearing.
2. Check the
oil
seal
lips for damage and
wear.
Replace
as
required.
Removal
1.
Pry oil seal(s)
out
of
place
with
a
screwdriver.
Replace all oil seals when overhauling
the engine.
NOTE:

Place a piece
of
wood
under the screwdriver
to
prevent damage
to
the
case.
2. Drive
out
the
bearing(s) with a socket
and hammer
or
with
a hydraulic press.
