Chapter 8
Troubleshooting
If you encounter a system error message on the screen
during operation, you may be able to fix the problem.
For example, you might need to close the printer door or
take some other simple action.
If you are unable to resolve the system error, contact
Advanced Instrument Hot-Line Technical Service for
assistance. (See “Contacting Advanced Instruments” on
page 5.)
CAUTION: Always unplug the power cord before
opening or removing the instrument cover. You could
be exposed to electric shock, excessive temperatures,
or mechanical hazards.
CAUTION: A discharge of static electricity from
contact with the human body or other conductor can
damage system boards or static-sensitive devices.
Never perform internal maintenance without following
recommended electrostatic discharge (ESD)
protection procedures.
8.1 General errors
Table 9 lists general errors that the system can detect.

Place a Micro-Sample Test Kit
(P/N:133800) on the instrument.
Printer door open Close the printer door.
Printer out of paper Replace printer paper.

8.2 Errors during calibration
For a list of errors that can occur during calibration, see
Table 5 on page24.
8.3 Errors during testing
Table 10 lists errors that can occur during a test.
If an error occurs during a test, a message displays on
the screen and is recorded in the events database.
Discard the sample, carefully clean the plunger, and then
try a new sample. If the error occurs again, refer to
Table 10, below, for a possible remedy.

Cause: The sample might be outside the range
of the instrument:
“Out of range Low” indicates the measured
reading is below -10 mOsm.
“Out of range High” indicates the measured
reading is above 2200 mOsm.
Action:
Test a control such as Clinitrol.
Check for particulate matter in the sample.
Sample did
not freeze
Cause: The sample might be above the range of
the instrument.
Action:
Confirm sample is present in the sampler.
Test the solenoid. (See “Solenoid
maintenance” on page37.)
Test a control such as Clinitrol to see if the
issue persists.
Clean the sample probe.
Sample
pre-freeze
Cause: The sample froze prematurely.
Action:
Re-run a new sample using a known control
such as Clinitrol.
Check for particulate matter in the sample.
Clean the sample probe with a chamber
cleaner dampened with water.
Test timeout
Cause: The instrument was unable to complete
the test within the allotted time.
Action:
Check for particulate matter in the sample.
Test a control such as Clinitrol to see if the
issue persists.
If the issue persists, the sample might be
outside the range of the instrument.
