To Clean the EI HES
Materials needed
Abrasive paper (5061-5896)
Alumina abrasive powder, 100 g (393706201)
Aluminum foil, clean
Cloths, clean (05980-60051)
Cotton swabs (5080-5400)
Glass beakers, 500 mL
Gloves, clean, lint-free (Large 8650-0030) (Small 8650-0029)
Solvents
Methanol (reagent-grade)
Methylene chloride (reagent-grade)
Acetone (reagent-grade)
Ultrasonic bath
Procedure
1 Disassemble the ion source. (See “To Disassemble the EI HES” on page 165
or “To Disassemble the EI XTR Source” on page 168.)
2 Collect the following parts to be cleaned if you are cleaning an EI HES: (See
Figure 54 on page 172.)
Repeller
Source body
Extractor lens (5)
Post extractor lens 1 (4)
Post extractor lens 2 (3)
Ion focus lens (2)
Extended entrance lens (1)
These are the parts that contact the sample or ion beam. The other parts
normally should not require cleaning.
