5.1 Standard Cranial Reference Array
General Information
Figure 17
Reference arrays allow the navigation system to track the location of the patient’s head throughout
the procedure.
Reference arrays are generally attached to a headholder using an adapter (or clamp). The type of
adapter used depends on your reference array. The reference array along with the adapter
comprise the reference system.
Each reference array is equipped with a cone ① which you can use to verify the accuracy of
instruments, (e.g., the pointer, Softouch or suction tubes).
NOTE: For all instruments with spherical or flat tips (e.g., suction tubes), be aware that a tip
deviation occurs when verifying accuracy using the reference array cone.
Sterility
Usually, two reference arrays are used:
• One for preoperative procedures (patient registration). The reference array used for registration
may be unsterile as registration is usually performed in an unsterile environment.
• One for intraoperative navigation. The reference array used for navigation must be sterilized
before use and attached during draping.
NOTE: Verify registration accuracy after exchanging the unsterile reference array for the sterile
reference array and verify that it is rigidly fixated.
