To set a receive mode follow the instructions
below.
a Press Menu.
b Press a or b to choose
Initial Setup.
Press OK.
c Press a or b to choose
Receive Mode.
Press OK.
d Press a or b to choose Fax Only,
Fax/Tel, External TAD
(MFC-440CN only) or Manual.
Press OK.
e Press Stop/Exit.
The LCD will display the current receive
mode.

an external telephone or external telephone answering device connected
on the same line as the machine?
