PRE-SEASON SERVICE
PRE-SEASON SERVICE
If the ou tboard was re moved fro m th e boat for
storage, make sure it is rein stalled with facto ry
specified hardware. Refer to the Predelivery and
Installation Guide.
Outboard Mounting Bolts
• Check and re-tighten outb oard mou nting bolts
to a torque of 40 ft. lbs. (54 N·m).
Gearcase Lubricant
• Check the lubricant level.
• Inspect gearcase for leaks. If leak is apparent,
pressure and vacuum test gearcase.
• Repair gearcase as needed.
Battery(s)
• Replace batteries that cannot be charged.
Power Trim and Tilt
• Remove filler cap and check fluid level.
• Inspect the power trim and tilt unit for leaks.
Repair as needed.
Operational Checks
• Refer to OPERATIONAL CHECKS on p. 32
• Steering system
• Remote controls
• All other accessories and instrumentation
Check Oil Injection Tank
•
Inspect the oil tank for leaks.
Check Fuel System
• Inspect entire fuel system for leaks prior to start-
ing outboard.
• Repair all leaks.
Water Pump
• Make sure a steady stream of water flows from
overboard indicator.
SUBMERGED ENGINES
Once a n outbo ard has been submerged in fresh
or salt water , it must be serviced with in three (3)
hours o f recove ry. Immed iate service can mini-
mize the corrosive affect that air has on the pol-
ished surfaces of the crankshaft, connecting rods,
and internal powerhead bearings.
IMPORTANT: If outboa rd ca nnot b e st arted or
serviced immediately, it should be resubmerged in
fresh water to avoid exposure to the atmosphere.
Engine Dropped Overboard
(Not Running)
Disconnect the battery cables at the battery.
Rinse powerhead with clean water.
Remove spark plug leads and spark plugs.
Place o utboard in hor izontal po sition (cylinder
heads do wn). Slowly rot ate flywheel in a clock-
wise rotation to work all water out of powerhead.
IMPORTANT: If sa nd o r silt may h ave entered
the outbo ard, DO NOT a ttempt to st art it. Disas-
semble and clean.
Disassemble all electric al connectors. Clean con-
nectors and terminals, and tre at with water dis-
placing electrical spray. Apply Electrical Grease to
terminals prior to reassembly . Coat all expose d
solenoid terminals and engine grounds with Black
Neoprene Dip.
Clean and inspe ct all electrical componen ts.
Replace dama ged or corroded compone nts prior
to returning the outboard to service. Electric start-
ers sho uld be disassemb led, clea ned, flush ed
with clean water, and treated with water displacing
electrical spray prior to reassembly.
Disconnect fuel supply hose from outboard. Drain
and clean all fuel hoses, filters, and fuel tanks.
Disconnect o il supply h ose a nd oil retu rn hose
from outb oard. Drain an d clean a ll o il h oses, fil-
ters, and oil tank assemblies.
Refill fuel tank with fresh fuel and oil tank with rec-
ommended oil.
A WARNING
Failure to check for f uel le akage could
allow a leak to go undete cted, resulting in
fire or explosion.
