ENGINE CONTROLS AND INSTRUMENTS (Continued)
Cockpit control to set propeller RPM.
PROPELLER
OVERSPEED
GOVERNOR
A propeller gearbox mounted component which provides
overspeed protection in the event of a propeller
governor failure.
An instrument that indicates the speed of the gas
producer (N
1
) or the propeller (RPM).
An instrument that indicates engine torque output by
recording torque meter oil pressure in pounds per
square inch. (Torque X RPM is proportional to engine
power output delivered to the propeller gearbox.
Standard temperature as defined in meteorological
terminology.
Fuel flow in pounds per hour of fuel consumed.
AIRPLANE PERFORMANCE AND FLIGHT PLANNING
TERMINOLOGY
DEMONSTRATED
CROSSWIND
VELOCITY
Demonstrated Crosswind Velocity is the velocity of
the crosswind component for which adequate control of
the airplane during takeoff and landing was actually
demonstrated during certification tests. The value
shown is not considered to be limiting.
Usable Fuel is the fuel available for flight planning.
Unusable Fuel is the quantity of fuel that cannot be
safely used in flight.
Pounds Per Hour is the amount of fuel (in pounds)
consumed per hour.
Nautical Miles Per Gallon is the distance (in nautical
miles) which can be expected per gallon of fuel
consumed at a specific engine power setting and/or
flight configuration.
g is acceleration due to gravity.
Minimum Fuel is the minimum amount of fuel as shown
in Section 2 for takeoff or steep climbs at airspeeds
below V
y
.
Course Datum is the compass reference used by the
autopilot, along with course deviation, to provide lateral
control when tracking a navigation signal.
