4 – Feeding
4.1 Feeding Overview
The feeding system employs a mass scale or load cell and feeder assembly to monitor the food consumption of
one type of food. Typically, up to two types of food can be monitored for each cage. The cage will have the
appropriate faculties for delivering the food, either in the center of the cage or on the ends. Also, access to the
food can be controlled. Bouts of eating and the amount of food eaten are measured by the mass scale or load
cells and recorded synchronously or asynchronously with metabolic measurements. The following sub-sections
detail the components used in the feeding system:
4.2 Mass Scale
The mass scale is usually integrated into the CLAMS shelf. The user needs to only switch on the scale after
power has been applied to the shelf. The following details the ports and buttons found on the mass scale. The
CLAMS shelf has been omitted for clarity.
