6.8 Engine Oil System
The lubricating oil quality has a considerable influence on the life, performance and
thus also on the cost effectiveness of the engine.
6.8.1 Recommended Engine Oil Specification
Diesel Engine: API – CJ-4 or CK-4
LP Gas Engine: API – SM Or Higher
6.8.2 Lubricating oil change intervals
The intervals depend on:
lubricating oil quality
sulphur content in the diesel fuel
type of application of engine
The lubricating oil change interval must be halved if at least one of the following
conditions applies:
the truck is operating in an extreme environment or under extremely
arduous conditions.
Sulphur content in diesel fuel of >0.5 weight % (5000 ppm).
If the lubricating oil change intervals are not reached within a year, the oil
should be changed at least once a year.
Caution
Switch off the engine before working on the lubricating system.
Wait until the engine and exhaust system are cool enough to touch before
commencing work.
Note
Do not operate the engine if the oil level is below the Min mark or above the
Max mark.
If using engine oil of a different brand or viscosity to the previous one, be
sure to drain all the previous oil before adding the new engine oil.
On DPF-equipped diesel engines, fuel may get mixed with engine oil during
the regeneration process. This dilutes the oil and increases its quantity. If the
oil rises above the Max mark on the dipstick it has been diluted too much.
Change the engine oil immediately if this is the case.
If the interval between DPF regenerations becomes 5 hours or less, change
the engine oil.
Mixing of engine oils should be avoided because the worst properties of the
mixture are always dominant.
