13b. Three bolts hold the left side of the steer-
ing gear box. See Figure 4.77.
14. Withdraw the steering gear behind the left side
inner fender. See Figure 4.78.
15. Installation notes:
15a. Center the steering rack in its travel, then
slide it into position.
15b. Apply a small amount of anti-seize com-
pound to the splined shaft that enters the
steering gear box.
Align the blind spline on the shaft with the
blind spline cut into the lower steering
shaft universal joint.
Connect the steering shaft to the steering
gear box as the steering gear box is
moved into position.
15c. Insert the steering rack mounting bolts,
threading the nuts on finger tight.
After all the nuts and bolts are in position,
tighten each to a torque of 18-22 ft-lbs.
(24.5-30 N-m).
15d. Insert the pinch bolt that clamps the lower
universal joint to the splined shaft on the
steering gear box.
Install the nut on the bolt, and tighten it to
a torque of 32-36 ft-lbs. (43-49 N-m).
15e. Re-connect the tie rod ends, and tighten
the stud nuts to a torque of 22-28 ft-lbs.
(30-38 N-m).
15f. Reinstall the kick panel by reversing the
steps used to remove it. Position the
throttle pedal as the kick panel is installed.
15g. Install the brake pedal pad.
15h. If the plastic bushings that support the
throttle pedal have worn, replace them.
Install the shoulder bolt that the throttle
pedal pivots on, and secure it with a nut.
15i. Install the shoulder bolt, washer, and nut
that connects the throttle cable to the
throttle pedal.
15j. If the cooling matrix was moved (diesel),
return it to its original position, and fasten
it with the nuts and bolts previously
removed.
15k. Reinstall the hood by reversing the proce-
dure used to remove it.
15l. Install the wheels, and tighten the lug nuts
to a torque of 75 ft-lbs (102 N-m).
15m. Lower the vehicle to the ground, check the
alignment, and test drive it in a safe area
before returning it to service.
