3e. Use a 5/16” wrench to remove the screws
that hold the splash shield to the fender.
See Figure 8.25.
3f. Use a pair of 12mm wrenches to loosen
the pivot bolt, and a 12mm wrench to
loosen the tension adjusting screw.
See Figure 8.26.
3g. If the belt is to be replaced, pivot the alter-
nator up and in to produce enough slack
to remove the belt.
3h. If the previous belt failed prematurely,
identify and correct the cause of the belt
failure.
3i. Carefully pry the alternator outwards to
make the desired change in tension.
3j. Tighten the tension adjusting bolt then the
pivot bolt to a torque of 13 ft-lbs. (18 N-m)
then re-check belt tension.
4. Alternator removal
Test the alternator as described in the Electrical
Chapter of this manual before removing it.
Contact the partnering Caterpillar dealer before
removing the alternator from the vehicle.
4a. Tilt the driver’s seat forward and release
the Camloc fasteners to remove the par-
cel bin from under the seat.
4b. Disconnect the negative battery cable
using an 10mm wrench. See Figure 8.27.
4c. Remove the right rear splash shield as
described in the Alternator and Water
pump belt section of this chapter.
