Chapter 8 - Caterpillar Engine and Related Systems
221
FILTERS: AIR, OIL, FUEL
1. Importance of the air filter:
Caterpillar recommends a 500 hrs. or annual
service interval for air filter replacement.
Intervals may be reduced in severely dusty oper-
ating conditions.
Diesel engines are unthrottled. Because the
incoming air is not regulated, they may draw-in
as much as 6,000 gallons of air for each gallon
of fuel consumed.
Ingesting contaminated air will rapidly destroy a
diesel engine.
Periodically inspect the intake tract for any leaks,
chafing, or damage. If a leak is suspected,
replace the damaged part before continuing
operation of the engine.
If there is no reason to suspect that dirt is getting
into the intake system down-stream of the air fil-
ter, it is best left un-disturbed.
2. To reach the air filter:
2a. Turn-off the engine. Removing the air filter
with the engine running will allow dirt to
enter the engine.
2b. Slide the driver’s seat all the way back, tilt
it forward, and remove the parcel bin from
beneath the seat. See Figure 8.6.
2c. Clean the area surrounding the air filter.

2d. Lift the lock lever and rotate the air filter
cover counter-clockwise to release it from
the air filter housing. See Figure 8.7.
2e. Remove the cover and withdraw the filter
element.
2f. Immediately insert the replacement ele-
ment (Cub Cadet part # 751-10376)
2g. Replace the cover: Align the #1 on the
cover with the top arrow embossed on the
edge of the housing. The debris drain
should be down. See Figure 8.8.
2h. Rotate the cover clockwise until the lock
lever clicks into place, securing the cover.
