Starting the Engine
Prestart Conditions
NOTE: The engine will not start unless the transmission
directional control lever is in the NEUTRAL
position.
1. Engage the parking brake, if not already engaged.
Place the transmission directional control lever in the
NEUTRAL position.
2. If Lift trucks are equipped with electrical disconnect
switches, the engine will not start unless the
disconnect switch is in the ON (closed) position.
Before starting, turn the disconnect switch to the
OFF(open) position.
Diesel Engine
Starting a Cold Diesel Engine
1. Turn the key to the ON position. The start preheat
indicator light will come ON. The preheat indicator
light will stay ON approximately seven seconds,
depending on the surrounding air temperature.
NOTICE
Do not engage the starter for more than 10 seconds.
2. When the preheat indicator light goes OFF, turn the
key to the START position, with the accelerator
pedal fully depressed.
3. Release the key when the engine starts and release
the accelerator pedal to a low idle position.
4. If the engine stalls or does not start, turn the key to
the OFF position, then repeat steps 1 thru 3.
Starting a Warm Diesel Engine
1. Turn the key to the ON position and then to START
position, without waiting for the preheat indictor light
to go OFF. At the same time fully depress the
accelerator.
2. Release the key when the engine starts and release
the accelerator pedal to a low idle position.
